Synnøve S. Bjørset ranks among the foremost performers and finest interpreters of traditional Hardanger fiddle music today. She grew up in Jølster, Western Norway, and still resides there working as a freelance musician and producer.
Synnøve learned fiddling from some of the most prominent traditional fiddlers in the region, and has later found inspiration and repertoire in old archive recordings. She plays a wide range of scordatura tunings, and has a fine and melodious collection of little-known tunes and reinterpretations of familiar standards in her portfolio. Mainly focusing on her solo fiddling, she also regularly performs with string folk ensemble Majorstuen. Since 2011 she has been the artistic leader of Gamlebanken Spelemannslag. |
– The first quality I discovered in hardanger fiddle music, was the sound. Sound as in the timbre of this particular instrument, the hardanger fiddle sound. I experience it as a light, crisp kind of scrapy sound, and yet it has this glass clear, slightly transparent, surface. I love that sound.” |
Synnøve S. Bjørset has released a number of albums, both solo and with string folk ensemble Majorstuen. All albums are available on iTunes, Spotify and Tidal.
